Voices from around the NCAA...Durand Scott (University of Miami)

Well with the transition of having a new basketball director and head coach it's
been a little different. Getting to know them and what they stand for has helped
a lot. Thus far we are 4-1 and are doing well under these new conditions. My team
seems comfortable but still had much more to learn and is willing to do so. We
are ranked 4th in ACC so we're shooting to finish in 1st and make an appearance in the
NCAA tournament. We believe this is the year to do so and with me being a junior, I am going to help
lead my team to have the best possible chance.

11/26/2011 Colgate University

We were successful last night in getting our first home win against Colgate Raiders. This is our second win of the season and we are really starting to come together. Our freshman are building momentum as they are gaining a lot of experience. Chavaughn Lewis emerged as a strong player recording his career high 23 points, shooting 47% from the field. This was a great accomplishment for him after making the Mohegan Sun All Tournament Team. Other freshman such as Manny Thomas proved to be integral parts of the team as he also recorded a career high 13points and wowed the crowed with a thunderous dunk. Thomas has brought a lot of energy as he causes a lot of charges on defense. Junior Devin Price has been consistent as he recorded 12 points and a team high 5 assists. He has consistently averaged 11.12 points a game while, leading the team in assist. Sophomore Adam Kemp recorded 8 points and 10 rebounds proving to be a dominant force inside. Overall, this was a big win for the Marist Basketball program and we hope to build upon it as we take on in conference foe Loyola University on Thursday December 1 down in Maryland. We are now 2-4.

11/24/2011 Happy Gobble Gobble Day

Hey everyone its Thursday and its Thanksgiving. I hope everyone out there is enjoying their day. As for me and some of my teammates we are at school on this lovely holiday because we either live to fa or it was just a waste of time to go home and have to be back later tonight. We had practice at 8am this morning and finish at about 11am. Some people parents came to pick them up but others like Devin Price who lives in California, Jesse Martin who live in Maryland, Jay Bowie who lives in Florida and Pieter Prinsloo who lives in Delaware are still at school. As for me I only live and hour and a half away on the train but I decided to stay here up at school because I would only be able to go home for a short period of time, eat and have to come right back. Yea it sucks but hey, that's the life of a college athlete. Being that I live with Devin and Jesse we all decided that we would just go to the diner and eat thanksgiving dinner there. I hope all is well with everyone and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

11/23/2011

Its Wednesday and we are enjoying our day off from practice. The campus is quiet and relaxing with the majority of the students gone. I am still waiting to take an MRI to see what is wrong with my knee.Other than that all I can really do is get treatment and relax my leg.

11/22/2011 Bucknell University

Its Tuesday morning and its our 1st home game. The only bad thing is that the students are on break for Thanksgiving break and we will not have the support that we would like to have. We had shoot around at 1pm then we went over to Cosimos restaurant where we eat lunch before every late game. We all were excited at lunch because this was our 1st time that we were going to be able to play in the new McCann Arena. At 5:00pm we all headed to the gym to get treatment and ready for the game. This is the 2nd game in a row that I was not able to play. Bucknell University has a good team. They won 25 games last year and made it to the NCAA tournament last year and they also return nine players that was on last years team. This would have been a great win for us against  good team.Unfortunately we lost by a score of 74-68. We never had the lead in the game after we went up 15-13. We went into halftime down 12 points 40-28. In the second half Bucknell kept their lead. The closest we got to was down 6 points with 4:34 left. Each team scored seven points down the stretch but it was not enough to win the game. We lost by a score of 74-68. Sophomore Adam Kemp led us with 16 points and 6 rebounds. We are now 1-4 with our next game against Colgate on Saturday 11/26/2011

Record 1-3

We are now 1-3 with our win over Radford University. The team looks to have a great practice on Monday to prepare for a win against Bucknell on Tuesday night.

11/20/2011 Radford University

Radford University is a team who were up against the ropes due to their record just like we were. So coming into this game we felt positive that we can come out with a win. I was unable to compete in this game so once again I had to watch from the bench but I had faith in my team that they could win without me. The first 8 minuets of the game Radford jumped in front with a 10-2 lead. Watching from the bench I was kind of getting nervous at this point. But with three quick baskets we were able to cut the lead to 2 points right under the 12 minuet mark. For the next 11:38 we buckled down on defense and ran good offense to go into the half up 2 points. This was the first time all season that we were not down at half. With a strong 2nd half we were able to make the lead up to 17 points. We eventually won the game by a score of 60-47. Freshman Chavaughn Lewis led us in scoring with 17 points and Junior Devin Prisce netted 16 points. Next up is our home opener against Bucknell University on Tuesday 11/22/2011

11/19/2011 Vermont University

Its Saturday morning and we are just hours away from our 1st game in Mohegan Sun. We had a 9:30am wake up call for breakfast then a 12pm shoot around at the Connecticut Sun arena where the WNBA team practice at. After the shoot around we had an hour to rest until we had pre-game meal at 2pm. After pre-game meal we watched film and then walked down to the arena for the game. The game started off slow but as time progressed the speed of the game picked up. With about 7 minuets left in the 1st half I got a deflection and received a pass from freshman Manny Thomas. I went up for the layup but came down wrong on my leg. I finished the rest of the half but was unable to play the remainder of the game. At the half we were down 3 points with my 11 points being high scorer for our team. Watching the 2nd half from the bench I was frustrated because I was not able to help my team try and win the game. We eventually lost the game by a score of 84-75. Freshman Chavaughn Lewis and Junior Devin Priceled us in scoring with 15 points each. Being that we lost we faced Radford tomorrow night at 7:30pm

Mohegan Sun

We are traveling to Mohegan Sun, CT for the Tip-off classic. We face Vermont University on Saturday night. Depending on how we do we face either LIU/Radford. We are very excited because these are two games that we can win. We match up well with both teams at every position. If we win these two games our record will be 2-2.

Voices from around the NCAA...Shasha Brown(Weslyn University)

So practice has been CRAZY intense. Our coach is pushing us in every
aspect of our game. This year we have adopted the motto “It’s a Great
day to be Great.” As his first recruiting class, now Juniors, he feels
that we have the talent and drive to win it all. We were selected to
finish 4th in the NESCAC by the League, we’ll ignore politics for now
though. Michael Challaghan has the potential to be an all conference
player, while I was selected to pre-season First Team All Conference.
All in all this year feels good. I’m a Jr tri-captain along with Greg
St. Jean and Jason Mendel. I’m excited for what this season holds.

Next Up......

Our record is now 0-2....We are back on campus and have practice for the next few days until we depart on Friday Morning for Mohegan Sun, CT to conclude the rest of the tournament. We face Vermont University on Saturday night and the winner of LIU/Radford on Sunday Night.

11/14/2011 2nd game against The University of South Florida

This was the second game of the year and we were excited because this was a game that we could win against a team that is in one of the best college basketball conferences there is. We were also excited because we were in Tampa, Florida where our sophomore forward Jay Bowie is from and his family was going to get to see him play. The game was not held on the campus of South Florida because their arena is under construction. We had to play in St. Peters Forum arena which was also a hockey arena. During the warmups we were cold from the ice we were playing on top of. The game started of good for us with Jay Bowie scoring our first four points of the game. As the game grew on and coming into the 2nd media timeout under the eight minute mark we had the lead with a score of 19-16. USF went on a 11-4 run. We responded with run of our own going into halftime down 3 points. Coming out of halftime we rallied off 7 quick points to force their coach to call a timeout. USF rallied off a 6-0 of their own. We responded with back to back 3 pointers to make the score 46-42. USF then went on a 15-0 run and never looked back. We lost the game 81-67. We played a good game but could not finish it out. I was the leading scorer with 12 points with Jay Bowie, Adam Kemp and Isaiah Morton all scoring 11 points.

11/13/2011 Cont...

Its 11:27pm and while I'm getting ready for bed my roommate George Dallas is up doing his reading 2 homework. We have a long day tomorrow. We have 9:00am wake up call, breakfast at 9:30 and 12:00pm shoot around before the game at 7pm against The University of South Florida. Good night and I will see you guys tomorrow.

11/13/2011

Wake up was at 10:30 so we got to get a lot of rest. We had team breakfast then had a 2 hour practice at Tampa Prep High School, where sophomore Jay Bowie attended high school. We practice hard and prepared for the game Monday night. When we got back to the hotel we had lunch and study hall for 2 hours. By the time study hall was over it was 6pm. The weather was so nice that the team decided to sit outside by the pool area and just enjoy the nice Florida weather and talk and tell jokes. We had another practice at 8pm for an hour and a half. When we got back to the hotel ate and all watched the University of California/George Washington game.

11/12/2011

The morning after the game we had a team breakfast and practiced at Kentucky's practice facility. After practice we drove to the airport to fly out to Orlando, Florida. We landed in Florida at about 6:30pm and had a 2 hour drive to Tampa. We checked into the hotel and everybody just stayed in their rooms and watched television because we were all exhausted from the game the night before, practice and the flight.

1ST Game University of Kentucky

Hey guys, sorry I'm posting so late but due to the lack of wifi in the hotel I was unable to blog. We faced Kentucky the number 2 team in college basketball in Rupp Arena. For those who do not know about Rupp, it is the most historic college arena there is. Coming into the game everyone was nervous and excited about playing in this kind of environment. Playing in front of 22,000 people was great. The biggest crowd we will play against this year in our conference will be about 7,000 people. Kentucky has 6 players that will eventually play in the NBA in the next 2 years. We played a tough and hard game. Going into halftime we were only down 9 points. Many people watching the game were very shocked at how hard we were playing. In the second half Kentucky gained a huge lead and never looked backed. Freshman Isaiah Morton led us in scoring with 13 points and I was next with 12 points. After the game the team was down about the lost but a lot of the press and the Kentucky coach came and talked to us and gave us a big compliment on our play.

Monmouth University Scrimmage 11/5/11

On Saturday we had our second scrimmage against Monmouth University. The outcome of this game was a little different from the previous scrimmage against FDU. We lost the game by 2 points. Even though we lost we played well as a team even without  our senior RJ Hall and Freshman Chavaughn Lewis did not compete in the game. I led the team in scoring with 18 points and 7 rebounds while freshman guard Manny Thomas contributed 16 points and 6 rebounds. As a team we shot 24/40 from the free-throw line. That was not a good percentage so we need to work on that. Other than that the team is doing good and is getting ready for our first game against the University of Kentucky which is only four days away.
